Ohio State G/F Evan Turner wins 2010 Oscar Robertson
Trophy; Henry Iba Award to Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim
Ohio State junior G/F Evan Turner is 2010 Oscar Robertson Trophy winner

ST. LOUIS (USBWA) – The U.S. Basketball Writers Association has selected Ohio State guard / forward Evan Turner from a field of 16 finalists as the winner of the 2010 Oscar Robertson Trophy, presented annually to the Men's National College Player of the Year. Syracuse's Jim Boeheim has been voted winner of the Henry Iba Award to the National Coach of the Year.

A 6-7, 210-pound junior from Chicago, Turner was the consensus choice by voters in all nine geographical districts of the USBWA. He becomes Ohio State's first national player of the year since NBA Hall of Famer Jerry Lucas won his second straight USBWA player of the year award in 1962. Turner, already named the Big Ten's Player of the Year, is also the first Big Ten player to win the national honor since Purdue's Glenn Robinson in 1994.

A first-team USBWA All-American and USBWA District V Player of the Year, Turner led the Buckeyes (29-8) to the Big Ten regular-season and tournament championships and into the NCAA Midwest Regional in St. Louis, where they were eliminated by Tennessee.

Turner was presented with the Oscar Robertson Trophy by its namesake Oscar Robertson at the USBWA's annual College Basketball Awards Breakfast on Friday, April 2 at The Columbia Club in downtown Indianapolis on the eve of the NCAA Men's Final Four. Boeheim received the Henry Iba Award at the same event, and IUPUI coach Ron Hunter was honored with the USBWA's “Good Guy” award.

"I think he's very deserving," Ohio State coach Thad Matta said of Evan Turner. "I am very proud of what he's done. He's one of the most multi-dimensional players in the country. He has an ability to score the basketball, drive it, get to the foul line, and shoot threes. His passing makes everyone on the floor that much better."

Despite missing six games early in the season due to injury, Turner led the Big Ten in scoring and rebounding, and was second in assists and steals and third in field goal percentage. Including his two NCAA Tournament games, he is averaging 20.0 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. He has recorded two triple-doubles and 16 double-doubles this season.

Now in his 34th season as head coach at his alma mater, Jim Boeheim is the winningest coach in Big East Conference history and the second winningest active coach in Division I basketball with 829 career wins -- 371 of them in the Big East -- and has led the Orange into the NCAA Regionals for the 16th time in his career. Boeheim's Syracuse teams have played three times for the national championship, winning the 2003 title. This season, Boeheim registered his record 32nd 20-win season and the Orange finished at 30-5 after being eliminated by Butler in the West Regional Semifinals.
